Kids, cars and travel sickness

Driving with 'hyper kids' who are crying and complaining of a lack of space in the back seat of the car is annoying to say the very least. We've all been there and it's bound to happen regularly. Children are energetic beings who want freedom and adventure; a confined space where they are locked into a car seat or belted in tightly won't produce pleasant angels ready to enjoy the passing scenery whilst playing in a peaceful fashion.

So what to do? Keep the kids busy with games that force them to concentrate on what's happening outside of your owned, borrowed or leased vehicle. Sing songs or invent new games that will keep their minds turning even when their bodies can't. Use words like 'imagine' or 'think' to encourage them to use the creative side of their brains. For younger children, make sure they are changed and fed before setting off on a long journey. Arranging your outing during the baby's nap time is also a clever tip because you can get on with your activities without so much as a peep from your little loved one. If the baby wakes up and begins crying take the time out to stop the car and deal with their needs. It will be difficult to concentrate on driving if you don't and you could endanger yourself and your child.  

When travelling in a car you may have some health issues to worry about. No matter how old your child is when they get sick on a journey it can not only be stressful but may also cause you to feel  nauseous. If you are alone in the car with your child you should pull over immediately to reduce the amount of mess there may be and if you are in a confined space then this may also cause you to feel ill. Make sure that if your child continues to feel ill or be sick take them to the doctors if this problem persists.

Travel sickness can not only affect children, adults can also feel sickness or have a headache whilst travelling but it usually affects young children. You can purchase travel sickness tablets to reduce the chance of an adult being sick or feeling ill whilst travelling. Try sitting at the front of the car so that you can see the road in front of you. If your child has travel sickness make sure that you open the window slightly and make sure that they are not reading anything. If you or your child reads whilst travelling this can also add to feeling sick. Travel sickness is very common and is nothing to be alarmed by. Just make sure that you pack plenty of towels and other cleaning products just in case something does happen whilst on your trip.
